Abstract

Counselor education programs often utilize experiential growth groups (EGGs) to effectively teach and supervise counselor trainees’ development as group facilitators. These groups provide students with the opportunities to gain perspective and empathy as future group leaders through their experiences as group members, as well as to develop their skills as group facilitators. Despite their common use, however, little research exists to understand how these groups benefit group counselor trainee development. This study utilized participant journals to identify counselor trainees’ experience of growth and therapeutic factors while participating in experiential growth groups as part of a group counseling course. Implications and suggestions are offered to enhance the growth and development of counselors-in-training as group leaders.
